Children are different from adults in many ways and now there is a nationally accredited course that is dedicated to the safety of children. Not only will you learn the most up-to-date techniques in delivering First Aid to children, you will also be meeting the requirements of the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) for first aid, anaphylaxis management and emergency asthma training.

By the end of this training course, student will be:
  • Be confident in the assessment and management of emergency situations involving adults, children or infants
  • Understand and demonstrate competence in the Primary Survey (DRSABCD)
  • Be confident in performing CPR in multiple situations and casualty ages
  • Know how to safely use an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED)
  • Know how provide first aid for bleeding, shock, asthma and anaphylaxis
  • Be confident in managing traumatic injuries including fractures and soft tissue injuries
  • Demonstrate knowledge of how adults and children are different and the impact this has on first aid management of children
  • Be confident in how to talk with children about their emotions and responses to events
     +  Course Content

  • Recognise an emergency situation
  • Identify, assess & minimize immediate hazards
  • Seeking assistance from emergency response services
  • DRSABCD Action Plan
  • The unconscious casualty (infant, child, adult)
  • Perform CPR in line with current ARC guidelines
  • Demonstrate safe use of an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) adult & children
  • Conduct a verbal secondary survey
  • Infection Control principals and procedures
  • Provide an accurate verbal report of the incident
  • Basic anatomy and physiology differences of children and adults
  • First Aid procedures for:
    • Allergic reactions
    • Anaphylaxis
    • Asthma
    • Basic wound care
    • Severe bleeding
    • Burns
    • Cardiac arrest
    • Choking and airway obstruction
    • Convulsions
    • Envenomation
    • Fractures, sprains and strains
    • Head injuries
    • Poisoning
    • Respiratory distress
    • Shock
  • Develop risk minimisation strategies for those at risk
  • Paediatric risk factors
  • Action Plans
  • Use of adrenaline auto-injector devices (EpiPen® and Anapen®)
  • Preparing and giving a verbal handover

     +  Course Duration

As of 30th November, 2016 we will be implementing our popular blended-delivery style of training to all public courses.
  • Up to 4 hours online theory pre-work (dependant on individual speed of learning), AND
  • 6.5 hours face-to-face training (scenario-based learning)



     +  Entry Requirements


Online Pre-Study:

  • Pre-study MUST be completed PRIOR to attending the practical training day.
  • Students without a signed certificate of pre-study completion may not be granted entry to the classroom
  • Pre-study is recommended to be completed using a laptop or desktop with good internet speed.
  • Pre-study will take between 1 to 4 hours depending on internet speed and speed of the learner
Paper-Based Pre-Study

  • Pre-study MUST be completed PRIOR to attending the practical training day.
  • Students arriving without a completed & signed pre-study booklet may not be granted entry to the classroom
  • Pre-study will take between 30min to 4 hours depending on how thoroughly you review the manual and speed of the learner

Student Age:

  • Students must be at least 14 years of age at the time of attendance
  • A consent form must be completed by the parent/legal guardian of students under the age of 18yrs and handed to the instructor on the day of training. Failure to supply this form will result in the student being denied access to training. Download the consent form

Refresher Students:

  • As this is a new national course, there is no refresher training available at this time
  • Students must be physically able to perform CPR for 4 minutes to meet the assessment requirements described in the Assessment Requirements (hyperlink assessment requirements with of this qualification.

  • Statement of Attainment in HLTAID004 Provide an Emergency First Aid Response in an Education and Care Setting
  • HLTAID004 incorporates skills, knowledge and assessment from the following qualifications:
    • HLTAID001 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
    • HLTAID002 Provide Basic Emergency Life Support
    • HLTAID003 Provide First Aid
    • 22024VIC Course in Emergency Management of Asthma in the Workplace
    • 22099VIC Course in First Aid Management of Anaphylaxis

@ Please note that this new qualification officially incorporates all the skills, knowledge and assessments of 5 courses plus the addition of extra training for the first aid management of children.  Therefore your Statement of Attainment will only list HLTAID004 Provide an Emergency First Aid Response in an Education and Care Setting.  This meets ACECQA requirements.

  • This certificate remains valid for 3 years.
  • The CPR component of this course is valid for 12 months
  • Annual CPR refresher training is recommended by the Australian Resuscitation Council
