Do you work in a high risk environment, have delayed access to advanced life support, or are you simply looking for additional skills and confidence when faced with an emergency?  Then this course is for you.  Building on what you learned in HLTAID003 Provide First Aid, you will gain the knowledge and skills required to provide an advanced first aid response.  This includes the management of head & spinal injuries, safe manual handling techniques, incident management, trauma management, oxygen administration and more.

     +  Training Objectives
By the end of this training course, students will:
  • Be confident in the assessment and management of emergency situations involving adults, children or infants
  • Understand and demonstrate competence in the Primary Survey (DRSABCD)
  • Be confident in performing CPR in multiple situations and casualty ages
  • Know how to safely use an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED)
  • Be confident in all aspects of administering Oxygen Therapy
  • Understand the indications and practical application for an oropharyngeal
  • Know how provide first aid for bleeding, shock, asthma and anaphylaxis
  • Be confident in managing traumatic injuries including fractures and soft tissue injuries
  • Demonstrate knowledge of how adults and children are different and the impact this has on first aid management of children
  • Be confident in how to talk with children about their emotions and responses to events

  • Recognise an emergency situation
  • Identify, assess & minimize immediate hazards
  • Seeking assistance from emergency response services
  • DRSABCD Action Plan
  • The unconscious casualty (infant, child, adult)
  • Perform CPR in line with current ARC guidelines
  • Demonstrate safe use of an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) adult & children
  • Assessing the need for oxygen administration
  • Understanding oxygen equipment and delivery devices
  • Safe and correct handling and use of oxygen therapy
  • Opening and clearing an airway using a suction device
  • Selection and insertion of  an oropharyngeal airway
  • Conduct a verbal secondary survey
  • Infection Control principals and procedures
  • Provide an accurate verbal report of the incident
  • Basic anatomy and physiology differences of children and adults
  • First Aid procedures for:
    • Allergic reactions
    • Anaphylaxis
    • Asthma
    • Basic wound care
    • Severe bleeding
    • Burns
    • Cardiac arrest
    • Choking and airway obstruction
    • Convulsions
    • Envenomation
    • Fractures, sprains and strains
    • Head injuries
    • Poisoning
    • Respiratory distress
    • Shock
  • Develop risk minimisation strategies for those at risk
  • Paediatric risk factors
  • Action Plans
  • Use of adrenaline auto-injector devices (EpiPen® and Anapen®)
  • Preparing and giving a verbal handover

Advanced First Aid

Advanced Resuscitation
  • 1 day face-to-face training - no pre-work required
     +  Entry Requirements


  • Students must be at least 14 years of age at the time of attendance
  • A consent form must be completed by the parent/legal guardian of students under the age of 18yrs and handed to the instructor on the day of training. Failure to supply this form will result in the student being denied access to training. Download the consent form
  • Students must have a current Certificate in either HLTFA311A Apply First Aid or HLTAID003 Provide First Aid to attend this advanced training
  • Students must be physically able to perform CPR for 8 minutes to meet the assessment requirements described in the Assessment Requirements (hyperlink assessment requirements with of this qualification.

  • This certificate remains valid for 3 years.
  • The CPR component of this course is valid for 12 months
